Why Go
Datong is a particularly useful destination for understanding northern China's history. Yungang, the Hanging Temple, Liao and Jin architecture and the old city bring several different periods together in one trip.
What Makes It Special
Datong has an unusually high concentration of historical layers. Buddhist art, ancient architecture, northern dynasties and Shanxi food culture all come together here.
Top Things to See
1. Yungang Grottoes
Yungang contains an extraordinary collection of Buddhist sculptures and cave art from the Northern Wei period. The real attraction is the variety across the caves—the changing styles, figures and decorative details—not simply one giant Buddha.
2. Hanging Temple
The Hanging Temple is built directly into a steep cliff, creating an unusual relationship between architecture and rock. It is also notable for bringing Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions together.
3. Huayan Temple
Huayan Temple is one of the most important surviving Buddhist complexes in Datong associated with the Liao and Jin periods. It offers a useful contrast to Yungang by focusing on historic timber architecture rather than cave sculpture.
4. Datong Ancient City
The old city shows how historic buildings and modern urban life coexist in Datong. Exploring it in the evening, followed by local Shanxi noodles, gives a more complete sense of the city.
What It Feels Like
Datong works well with a rhythm of historic sites by day and local food in the old city at night. Yungang and the Hanging Temple are separate trips, so avoid packing too much into one day.
Reality Check
- Datong is much more than its old city. At least two days makes sense if you want to see Yungang and the Hanging Temple without rushing.
Eat This
Knife‑Cut Noodles — Wheat flour is kneaded into a firm dough, then thin strips are shaved directly into boiling water with a special knife. The noodles are thick in the middle and thin at the edges, usually served with meat sauce, tomato or lamb broth. Hunyuan Cold Noodles — Potato starch is cooked into a jelly, cooled and sliced, then dressed with vinegar, chili oil, garlic and spices. It is cool, slippery and pleasantly sour and spicy.
Getting There
Datong is connected by high‑speed rail, including services from Beijing and Taiyuan.
How Long to Stay
Stay 2 days.
Who Is It For
Especially good for travelers interested in history, Buddhist art, architecture, photography and food.
