Why Go
If you want to understand the landscape often associated with China, Yangshuo is an easy place to start. The attraction is not just one landmark, but the combination of the Li River, karst peaks, rice fields, villages and everyday rural life.
What Makes It Special
What makes Yangshuo different is that its karst peaks are woven into everyday life, rising behind villages, farms and rivers. You are not simply looking at a scenic park—you are moving through a landscape where people still live and work.
Top Things to See
1. Li River
The Li River is the classic introduction to Yangshuo's karst landscape, with limestone peaks rising directly from the water. A boat or bamboo‑raft trip lets you experience the scenery from within the landscape rather than simply viewing it from a lookout.
2. Xingping
Xingping is one of the most visually striking sections of the Li River and is associated with some of China's most recognizable landscape views. Allow half a day to walk, take a boat and find a higher viewpoint over the river and mountains.
3. Yulong River
The Yulong River offers a quieter way to experience the countryside, with farms, villages and karst peaks along the water. Cycling is one of the best ways to experience it because the journey itself becomes part of the attraction.
4. Ten‑Mile Gallery
The Ten‑Mile Gallery is a convenient countryside route surrounded by karst peaks and farmland. It works best as a relaxed half‑day ride or drive rather than a checklist of individual attractions.
What It Feels Like
Yangshuo works best when you slow down. An early walk by the river, cycling through villages and a quiet afternoon overlooking the mountains can be more rewarding than rushing between attractions.
Reality Check
- Yangshuo is a well‑established tourist destination, and areas such as West Street are highly commercialized. Much of its character is found outside the busiest areas, among the rivers, villages and countryside.
Eat This
Beer Fish — Fresh river fish is usually pan‑fried until lightly browned, then simmered with beer, tomatoes, chilies, ginger and garlic. The result is tender fish in a slightly sweet, tangy and malty sauce. Guilin Rice Noodles — Rice noodles are cooked and mixed with a savory braising sauce, peanuts, pickled beans, herbs and often slices of meat. Unlike many noodle soups, the classic version is relatively dry, with the sauce coating the noodles.
