Why Go
If Dali feels too busy, Eryuan offers a quieter side of northern Erhai and rural Yunnan.
Its value is not one blockbuster attraction, but the combination of lakes, wetlands, hot springs, mountain villages and everyday local life.
For travellers who have already visited Dali or Lijiang, Eryuan provides a chance to slow down.
What Makes It Special
Eryuan feels more like everyday Yunnan than tourist‑centred Yunnan. Lakes, farmland, hot springs and villages are closely connected to local life.
If your goal is to understand rural Yunnan rather than simply visit famous attractions, Eryuan offers a more grounded experience.
Top Things to See
1. Xihu Wetland
A combination of lake, wetlands, villages and waterways that rewards a slow visit.
2. Hot springs
Eryuan is known for its hot springs, making a soak an easy addition to a slow‑paced itinerary.
3. Northern Erhai countryside
If possible, explore beyond a single attraction and visit several villages around northern Erhai.
What It Feels Like
Eryuan depends on your willingness to slow down.
It is not a place for rushing between three attractions in the morning and another city in the afternoon.
Staying overnight, visiting a hot spring, walking through villages and spending time around the lake will give you a much better sense of the area.
Reality Check
- English is limited.
- Public transportation is less convenient than around central Dali.
- Rural attractions can be spread out.
- A private or chartered car is often more convenient.
- Do not expect Eryuan to feel like another Dali Old Town.
- Its main appeal is its quieter pace and everyday atmosphere.
Eat This
Rushan — a local dairy product traditionally made from cow's milk. It can be grilled or fried. Raw pork dishes — a traditional Bai‑region speciality with flavours and preparation methods very different from the Chinese food many international visitors know. Local rice noodles — a simple everyday meal and an easy option when travelling around the countryside.
Getting There
The easiest approach is from Dali. Use Dali as your base or starting point, then travel north into Eryuan.
How Long to Stay
One to two days.
Who Is It For
Best for: Travellers interested in rural Yunnan, hot springs, lakes, photography and slow travel, especially those who have already visited Dali or Lijiang. Less suitable for: First‑time Yunnan visitors with very limited time who want to focus only on the most famous attractions.
Combine It With
For a slower Yunnan itinerary, try Dali → Eryuan → Shaxi. It offers a more local and less conventional alternative to the standard Dali–Lijiang route.
