Why Go

If Xi'an introduces you to Han and Tang China, Kaifeng offers a window into Song‑Dynasty China.
During the Northern Song period, Kaifeng was one of the world's major cities. Although the modern city is very different, its historic sites still provide a way to explore this period.
For international visitors, Kaifeng is especially useful for understanding an important transformation in Chinese history: the growth of highly commercialised, urban and sophisticated city life.

What Makes It Special

Song‑Dynasty urban culture is the key to understanding Kaifeng. The famous painting *Along the River During the Qingming Festival* depicts the bustling life of Northern Song Kaifeng. Today's Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a modern recreation based on the painting.
Other historic sites, including the Iron Pagoda, Xiangguo Temple, Longting and sections of the city walls, provide different perspectives on Kaifeng's long history.

Top Things to See

1. Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden

A useful introduction for first‑time visitors. It is not an original archaeological site, but a large cultural theme park inspired by *Along the River During the Qingming Festival*.

Kaifeng — 2. Iron Pagoda (top things to see)

2. Iron Pagoda

One of Kaifeng's most recognisable historic structures.

3. Xiangguo Temple

An important site for understanding Kaifeng's Buddhist and urban history.

4. Old Kaifeng

Don't spend the entire trip inside attractions. The old city's streets and food culture are part of the experience.

What It Feels Like

Kaifeng is a city that works particularly well when explored on foot and through food.
Unlike Xi'an, which has a few overwhelmingly famous symbols, Kaifeng is best understood by combining historic sites, old streets and local food.

Reality Check

  • Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a modern recreation, not an original Song‑Dynasty site.
  • Major attractions can be crowded during public holidays.
  • Kaifeng is a fairly large city, so not every attraction is within walking distance.
  • Some background reading about the Song Dynasty will make the visit much more meaningful.
  • Local food can be relatively strong in flavour.

Eat This

Soup dumplings — thin‑skinned dumplings filled with hot broth. Carp with crispy noodles — a traditional Henan dish combining sweet‑and‑sour carp with very fine noodles. Tongzi chicken — a traditional braised chicken dish with firm meat and a savoury flavour.
