Why go
The appeal of this route is not one single attraction but the constantly changing highland landscape: Tibetan villages, stone towers, grasslands, forests, snow mountains and alpine lakes. The seven‑day itinerary moves from Chengdu through Danba, Xinduqiao and Tagong to Daocheng Yading.
What makes it special
West Sichuan is special because one road trip connects several completely different landscapes. Danba introduces the relationship between Tibetan communities and the mountains through stone watchtowers and hillside villages. Around Xinduqiao, the landscape opens into broad valleys and grasslands that have made the area famous among photographers, while Tagong brings a much wider highland landscape with grasslands and snow peaks.
Daocheng Yading feels different again. Three sacred mountains—Xiannairi, Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji—rise above alpine meadows and glacial lakes. At these elevations, altitude, weather and physical condition become part of the journey itself, which is why the route recommends a gradual adjustment rather than immediately attempting strenuous hikes.

Top things to see
Daocheng Yading
Daocheng Yading combines three sacred peaks with alpine meadows and glacial lakes. Milk Lake and Five‑Color Lake require hiking at high altitude, making the environment itself part of the challenge.
Danba Tibetan Villages
Danba's hillside villages and tall stone watchtowers create one of the most distinctive architectural landscapes in western Sichuan. The towers also reflect older systems of defense and family organization.
Xinduqiao
Xinduqiao is famous for broad valleys, meadows, trees and distant mountains, particularly photogenic in autumn. It is less a single attraction than a landscape best experienced slowly by road.
Tagong Grassland
Tagong opens into a wide Tibetan plateau landscape where grasslands and snow mountains can appear together. It is also a good place to learn about local pastoral life.
Eat this
Butter Tea
Tea is blended with yak butter and salt to create a rich, savory drink. It is creamy and salty rather than sweet, and the flavor can take first‑time visitors by surprise.
Tsampa
Roasted barley is ground into flour and mixed with butter tea, milk powder or sugar, then kneaded into a dough‑like mixture by hand. It is simple, filling and central to Tibetan food culture.
What it feels like
This is a genuine road‑trip route. The scenery changes constantly, but long driving days are part of the experience.
Reality check
Altitude is the biggest variable. The route may be described as relatively easy, but high elevations can still be physically demanding. Gradual acclimatization and flexibility for weather are important.
